What we have learned from Kashmir since 2019
There are a few things we have learned from conducting trips here over the years. We have taken each of these into consideration while creating this itinerary.
1. Kashmir is much safer than many people assume.
We often associate Kashmir with uncertainty, but our experience over the years has been very different. In our experience, tourist-related incidents have been remarkably low compared to many other popular tourist destinations across the country.
2. A good hotel matters, especially in Gulmarg.
In winter, a decent property with proper room heating and reliable power backup is not a luxury. It is a necessity. When temperatures can fall to around -20°C, a poorly heated room can make an otherwise beautiful trip very uncomfortable.
3. Don't blindly trust old hotel reviews or photographs.
A property that was excellent last year may not offer the same experience today.
4. The people of Kashmir have always been incredibly kind to us.
Over the years, we have received tremendous help whenever someone in our group fell sick or needed assistance. These are experiences that have stayed with us long after the trip.
5. Having reliable local support makes a big difference.
Kashmir works through a strong local network, and having people we can call when something unexpected happens is extremely important when travelling with a group.
6. We prefer to work directly with local operators.
We have been working with our local partners for years and book directly with them wherever possible. This not only supports the local people financially, but also means we have people we can rely on when we need help.
7. Every locality has its own vehicle union.
Even though we travel between towns in a van, certain local areas have their own vehicle unions, meaning we need to use the vehicles of that locality and not outside vehicles. We have already accounted for these costs in the itinerary, so there are no surprises later.
8. Bargaining doesn't always work the way it does elsewhere.
Kashmir has a very strong local network. Even our driver or guide may not negotiate with another local operator on our behalf. Since we have been coming here for years, we have a fair idea of the standard rates for activities such as snow experiences, which are not included in the itinerary.
We know the places we want you to see, the stays we trust, and the experiences worth making the journey for. So join us this new year as we take you to see rich culture, breathtaking landscapes, and the kindest of humans and the most hospitable people. Kashmir will welcome you like nobody else.
